When sheets and blanks are fed automatically into processing machines, it is necessary to prevent two or more sheets entering the equipment inadvertently. Otherwise the result could be damage of tools and dies, stamping presses, expensive repairs and loss of production. Double Sheet Detection Systems are therefore a necessary part of automated sheet metal processing. This applies to highly automated production facilities in the automotive industry just as much as to the mass production of food and beverage cans. The sheet thickness is an important process parameter for tool and machine protection e.g. straighteners, for the assurance of the product quality according to ISO 9000 in blanking or slitting lines or to monitor the cost of the purchased materials. Roland supplies single-sided measuring systems as well as noncontact dual head systems. The measurements are based on magnetic, inductive and capacitance sensor principles. Detailed protocols according to SPC requirements provide objective basis for negotiations with the suppliers.

The eddy current testing systems are being used to detect defects in metallic semi-finished products such as wires, rods, cables, tubes and coils. Magnetic inductive systems have been especially developed for steel cord inspection in the steel belted radial tire industry to detect so-called spacing faults during the cutting and splicing operation of the web material.
